Hellebore Heaven

15 Mar

Hellebores have to be one of the plants I specify the most often in my planting plans.

They have so many plus points…
– they’re evergreen
– they flower at a quiet time of year
– they are generally undemanding
– they are quite happy in dry, shade once established
– they grow steadily without ever becoming invasive
– they self seed gently
– the beautiful flowers are not flowers actually but in fact sepals and the reason why they’re so long lasting

Their only fault, in my opinion, is that their flowers hang down so it’s harder to appreciate the delicate markings inside.

With all the time and effort going into breeding a blue rose or a black tulip, you would have thought somebody could be working on an upward facing hellebore.

So I’ve been crawling round my garden with my macro lens to get some pictures of these reclusive beauties.

Beautiful pics. Did you see the feature on Hellebores on Gardeners World the other day? Your pics reminded me it’s about time I got my camera out, it’s been ages. I have a page of flower and plant related images at http://www.edwardgunn.weebly.com in case you would like to have a look.

I love helleborus, but the flowers hanging down is really a downside.
