Following my earlier successes with bringing narcissi and muscari indoors to flower for weeks on end on my kitchen table, I have been looking for other plants to try.

Whilst picking up a few bits at my local Waitrose, I spotted some potted snakes head fritillaries – Fritillaria meleagris.
They were just coming into bud and in small 20cm pots but at only Β£5 they seemed worth a go.

I potted them into a slightly nicer clay pot and set them on the kitchen table. My kitchen is fairly warm – with an Aga – but north west facing so not much sun at this time of year.

A week later there are at least half a dozen flowers. Some of them are a little paler than I expected and the chequer board patterning is not as defined as I expected, but maybe that’s just the variety. Some of the lower leaves are a bit yellow – not sure whether this due to erratic watering or the conditions being a bit warm.

Overall I have enjoyed the delicate nature of the fritillaries but they don’t quite have the impact of the narcissi and muscari and lack the fragrance of the narcissi.

I shall continue my search for other plants to grow like this – maybe anemone coronaria or perhaps lily of the valley ?
