Indoor gardening for cold, snowy days !

31 Jan

With the weather really not being that conducive to outdoor gardening, I have resorted to bringing my garden indoors.

I know I should’ve been organised enough to plant up lots of bulbs back in the autumn but I didn’t ! But still feeling the need to have spring bulbs in the house, I headed off to my local DIY place and picked up several pots of sprouting bulbs – mini tete a tete narcissus, scented hyacinths and delicate grape hyacinths.

I squeezed them all into assorted pots and glasses – they don’t really need drainage as long as you don’t over water them.

With the grape hyacinths, I tried something slightly different. I carefully rinsed off as much of the compost from the roots as I could – a mess fiddly job but worth it. Then I popped them into a glass cylinder vase and some vintage French jam jars, and added just enough water to cover the roots.

They all have lasted 2-3 weeks – much better than cut flowers – and once they go over I will plant the bulbs straight into the garden.

You inspired me and I have just been washing earth off my grape hyacinths. Hoping they last well and I haven’t damaged the roots! Amanda
