Treat them mean to keep them keen – Roses !

At long last I got a chance to spend some real time in my garden – as opposed to the 5 minute tour I do in my dressing gown after breakfast every morning !

I was thrilled to see that all the hard pruning I had put my roses through last October has paid off and even the oldest, most gnarled trunks have begun to sprout fresh pink shoots.

It really is worth hard pruning old roses – especially if you have inherited old mis-shapen roses , you’ve got little to lose.

These roses will be all the happier this year and probably flower better as I will be able to train their branches to the horizontal ( they are old climbers ) which definitely gives you more roses.

This rose is not as old but is a vigorous rambler ( Adelaide d’Orleans – David Austin Roses) and needs a very firm hand to keep it trained to its support – originally rope swags, but these rotted badly after 5/6 years so we swapped them for strong wire between the oak posts.

There is just so much new growth every year that much of it needs cutting away, retaining just enough new branches to maintain the framework. With a good dose of rose fertiliser, it flowers its heart out every year.
