There’s snow business like Snowdrops !

10 Feb

Snowdrops are one of the first signs of Spring and one of the first flowers I remember as a child – being allowed to gather handfuls from surrounding woods – in the days when you could do that kind of thing !

Snowdrop mania may not be quite on a par with the Tulip Fever in Holland during the 18th century , but galanthophiles , as snowdrop fanatics are known, will pay several hundred pounds for just one rare snowdrop bulb! The record is £265 for a single Galanthus ‘Flocon de Neige’ bulb.

Collectors search out rare varieties with unique markings on the inner petals – you thought a snowdrop was a snowdrop, didn’t you ! But there are hundreds of different varieties with evocative names like Galthanthus ‘Grumpy’, G. ‘Walrus’, G. ‘Ding Dong’ and G. ‘Wasp’ all relating to the specific markings.
Personally I think I’d rather have a multitude of just the bog standard Galanthus nivalis, naturalised in low grass, than one ‘Flocon de Neige’!

Grow them under deciduous trees or shrubs in humus rich soil , divide them regularly, and don’t mow the grass until the leaves have died down.

Buy them ‘in the green’ – just after they’ve flowered rather than dry bulbs – from Avon Bulbs.
